The EPREL Journey

History

Energy labels were introduced to offer a clear and reliable solution to quickly identify the energy efficiency of a product. The roots of the ‘’European Product Database for Energy Labelling” or EPREL for short, can be traced back to the European Union’s (EU's) proactive stance on environmental conservation. Over the years, the EU’s Energy-Related Products (ErP) directive has undergone multiple refinements, leading to the establishment of EPREL in 2019. For consumers, EPREL is a robust database serving as a comprehensive record of energy-related product information, aiding them in making informed product choices. For manufacturers, EPREL is a centralised repository for compliance and transparency in the HVAC-R industry.

Decoding EPREL

From HVAC systems to refrigeration units, the EPREL portal functions as a digital archive, where manufacturers are mandated to register detailed information about their energy-related products. Each product must be meticulously documented, including:

  • Energy efficiency metrics
  • Technical specifications
  • Compliance data.

This level of transparency ensures that consumers have access to accurate information, fostering trust in the marketplace.

In the HVAC sector, EPREL compliance is not merely a regulatory obligation; it is a strategic imperative. By meticulously declaring product information, manufacturers signal their commitment to energy efficiency and environmental responsibility, which is inseparable from market relevancy. In fact, in a market saturated with options, manufacturers leveraging EPREL compliance gain a distinctive edge, guiding consumers toward environmentally conscious choices. This transparency not only generates consumer trust, but also aligns with the EU's broader sustainability goals, positioning compliant manufacturers as contributors to a greener future.

Challenges and Collaborative Solutions

As EPREL encompasses different intricacies depending on the nature of the products to declare, the challenges around data become apparent. One of the primary issues that manufacturers face is the need for agility in response to evolving regulations. The dynamic nature of EPREL requirements entails periodic monitoring and adjustment, which, when done manually or through in-house solutions, can be time-consuming and error-prone.

In recognition of these complexities, Eurovent Certita Certification has seamlessly incorporated EPREL declaration capabilities into the ProdBIM product engine. As Eurovent Certita Certification already holds the data required to produce energy labels for certified products, this integration results in an automated workflow to simplify the product declaration cycle. It’s strategic inclusion not only accelerates the compliance procedures associated with EPREL declarations, but also underscores ProdBIM's unwavering commitment to supporting manufacturers throughout their digitalisation endeavours.

This integration streamlines the declaration process and also introduces a layer of automation that significantly reduces the margin for errors. The collaboration between Eurovent certified manufacturers and ProdBIM is a strategic alliance, that not only ensures manufacturers meet regulatory standards with 100% accuracy, but also capitalise on the transformative power of EPREL compliance in the market.
